Ecclesiastical Biography
Dr. Tanya Dugat-Smith,
PhD, MBA
Life’s experiences, the environments in which we’re reared and our values and beliefs encased in God’s mercy, grace and love inevitably are responsible for the choices that we make in our lives. As a result Dr. Tanya Dugat-Smith seeks to be obedient to what God has charged her to do – spread a message of hope, love and positive options in Christ Jesus, prayerfully motivating action in God’s people. After having graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Texas with what most would deem a negative score card – she was a teen mother with a son, living below the poverty line in a small town, with only one parent in the home – her ill mother, and bewildered by a feeling of aloneness – the only hope she knew was in Christ Jesus supplemented by a loving extended family. Philippians 4:13 became her battle cry.
Dr. Dugat-Smith shares her diverse life experiences in her energetic, effective presentation style always encouraging others to overcome setbacks and excel in all of their pursuits. She has served as a keynote speaker for many church and civic engagements – locally and nationally. She has received many awards and recognitions for her commitment to service including the University of Houston’s 2004 Distinguished Young Engineering Alumni Award, the 2000 Black Engineer of the Year Career Achievement Award for New Emerging Leaders and featured in issues of the Career Engineer and the National Society of Black Engineers magazines. She has presented keynote addresses, facilitated workshops and given motivational presentations at numerous venues including Women’s Retreats, Youth Conferences, National Conventions and many more.
Dr. Dugat-Smith is founder of a nationally recognized youth outreach, pre-college program, FreshStart, which has served more than 1000 students since its inception. Her tutoring service promotes academic excellence having successfully deployed subject matter strategies that when used have consistently raised the averages of her clients at least an entire letter grade (from Junior High through College level Math). She is the principal consultant of her own company [www.drtanya.org] and has worked to bring stellar results to her clients in their endeavors ranging from business start-ups and strategic business development to process design, supply chain management and project management. She has taught Procurement & Risk Management and Project Management for the University of Phoenix and Introduction to Engineering at Texas A&M University. She is a contributing author to Tavis Smiley’s book, Keeping the Faith, with her inspiring life story, "Pregnant Teen to PhD". Dr. Dugat-Smith has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a MBA and a PhD.
As an active member of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Austin, Texas, she ministers through drama, teaches Sunday school and has co-planned a leadership development curriculum for a church wide leadership retreat in which she delivered the opening night keynote address. She ministers through singing, as a member of both the church choir and the award winning gospel choir – Chester D.T. Baldwin and Music Ministry Mass (M3) Choir. She has been a leader in the Junior Mission – teaching on the series, “A Woman God Can Use”. She also works extensively with a growing number of youth and young adults as both tutor and mentor. Even in her entrepreneurial endeavors as a business development and educational consultant, Dr. Dugat-Smith helps people and enterprises realize their God-given, inner potential. She believes that her life’s calling and thus career quest is to be a catalyst for significant positive change and growth of individuals and entities. Through it all, Dr. Dugat-Smith's top priorities remain her relationship with God, her three sons - Jamar, Raymond and Cortlan, and her loving husband, Oscar.
